Gig Buddies is a scheme that matches people with a learning disability and/or autism with volunteers, finding a common interest or a shared love for similar activities. For example; seeing live music, going to the theatre or socialising at your local pub quiz. Whatever your gig is there’s a Gig Buddy for you.
Some people with a learning disability and autism don't have many people in their lives who aren't paid to be there. This scheme aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness by supporting people to develop new social circles based on a shared enjoyment of activities.
We offer £10 towards any ticket purchased for an event, travel or non-alcoholic beverage. The purpose of the project is to build some genuine friendships through shared interests.
Each volunteer will have to attend a session (food provided!) and will be DBS checked. A member of staff will also be there for the first initial meeting with the pairing and will be support if needed. We will also ask for two references. Our volunteer training covers general scenarios to enable volunteers to understand their responsibilities should an emergency happen. We also conduct risk assessments with partners and support to address any risks.
It’s not all about gigs, we encourage people to find what their ‘gig’. That could be watching Bradford City play or going to the theatre. We will also run twice monthly socials where volunteers are welcome to join! We ask for the volunteer to be committed to the project for a year and to meet with their buddy twice a month.
Our Gig Buddies Project in Bradford is looking for someone to help us deliver training and assist the Project Coordinator to deliver the project.
The Gig Buddies Project supports people with a learning disability and autism across Bradford to go to gigs and night-time activities.
We are looking for someone to support staff to promote the project in the Bradford area by helping to contact local organisations and delivering posters and flyers where appropriate. The volunteer will also help to deliver training to Gig Buddies volunteers, speaking about subjects such as Gig Buddies, Friendship, Safeguarding, and Mencap.
