UBU Diversity Festival

As part of this year’s welcome week, a week-long series of events and activities to welcome new University of Bradford students to the city, the University of Bradford Students’ Union (UBU) is holding a Diversity Festival in the City Park on Thursday 20th September from 1-7pm.

The event was conceived following feedback from students, particularly international students, who wanted to be more involved with the city and discover what is available outside of campus. This event has been set-up to help bring the City to the students as well as celebrating the diversity of the city, its residents and its students.

All students at the University of Bradford are invited down to City Park to experience the speeches and entertainment, as well as discovering all the exciting things to do in the city centre.

The event will see a selection of speakers, acts and student groups taking over Centenary Square in the shadow of the town hall and next to the mirror pool to showcase what the city and campus can offer. There will also be opportunities for students to discover more about the places around the city as well.

There will be a wide range of great speakers and acts on stage talking about the Students’ Union and the city. These include Councillor Richard Dunbar, former UBU Sabbatical Officer Samayya Afzal, University of Bradford staff member Udy Archibong, and Asma Elbadawi, basketball player, coach and poet.

There will also be live music from incredible local acts Marc and Abi from Issimo, and The Last Minute, as well as other guests to be announced shortly!

The event will begin with introductions from the UBU’s own sabbatical officers, elected students who set the direction of the Students’ Union and represent the students across campus and the wider city.

Alongside these stage acts will be food from two on-site caterers, as well as give-it-a-go activities including wheelchair basketball, street dance and Bollywood dance. There will also be representatives from other sports and societies down on site.

The Students’ Union is also working with local venues to promote the many opportunities across the city.

The National Science and Media Museum will be running a special stall from 1-4pm to promote their cinema programmes, Lates events and volunteering opportunities before offering films later in the evening such as ‘Predator’ in IMAX.

Sunbridge Wells will be on hand to promote their upcoming student nights and brand new bars.

There will also be walking buses available from the UBU student team to help students discover key places in the city centre such as North Parade, The Broadway shopping and the Leisure Exchange.

The Students’ Union has also gone into partnership with the Crumbs app and have created their own tour of the campus and city. Starting in the Student Central building it takes students around the key buildings and facilities on campus and the main sites of Bradford city centre.

The UBU Sabbatical team said: “Bradford is an incredible, thriving and diverse City and we want to celebrate this and all the events and attractions taking place in the centre to help students settle into living here during their time studying at the University of Bradford, and being involved with the Students’ Union”.
