Learning Volunteer

Join our welcoming team as a Learning Volunteer and help create memorable learning experiences for young visitors and families at the museum. A science background is not required, just a positive, friendly attitude and a willingness to learn and engage with a wide range of visitors. As a Learning Volunteer, you will play a vital part in engaging visitors by helping our delivery team with hands-on activities and workshops designed to spark creativity, promote problem solving and grow a love of science and learning. We’ll provide training to help you bring these concepts to life.

In this role, you will:

  • Encourage participants to learn new things through interactive opportunities.
  • Cultivate an inclusive environment that fosters positive learning interactions.
  • With our support, help make science concepts relatable through your enthusiasm and approach.
  • Support engaging workshops and activities for families and schools.

You will have the chance to:

  • Gain valuable experience in science communication and public engagement with diverse audiences.
  • Make a positive impact by inspiring young minds and cultivating a love for learning.
  • Attend training with us to build transferable skills in science communication and working with audiences.

Initially this role will support summer holiday learning activities in August 2025 (weekdays and weekends), then we plan that there will be opportunities at weekends and school holidays. The role is rostered based on volunteers’ availability, so we can be flexible around you.

Please note: if you register your interest for this volunteering opportunity on the Bradford Student Union website, we will send you a simple application form to complete.

Skills

This role is perfect for people who are:

  • Enthusiastic about promoting learning and curiosity.
  • Friendly and approachable.
  • Comfortable interacting with children and families or want to develop their skills.
  • Good communicators and listeners.
  • Open to learning more about science concepts and how they’re explored with young people.

We ask all volunteers to show inclusive behaviours, valuing everyone’s contribution, and promoting a culture of openness.

What you’ll get from volunteering:

We want to ensure you have a rewarding experience with us. That why we’ll provide:

  • Learning and development opportunities from our volunteer programme training.
  • A chance to meet new people.
  • Perks such as free cinema tickets and shop/café discount.
  • References on request for all volunteers who have supported the museum.
  • Out-of-pocket travel expenses up to £6 per day.

Key dates:

  • Applicants will be invited to a taster session to meet the team. This will be your chance to find out more about the role and we’ll be getting to know you too. The tasters will be held on the afternoons of Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 July. You would only need to attend one afternoon, but it is a necessary part of joining this volunteer role. We’ll be in touch after you apply to find out your availability.
  • Following this taster, all successful applicants must complete a welcome and training day for the role on  Wednesday 30 July.
  • If you are not available for the above dates then unfortunately we cannot consider you this time around. However, this is a new role and one we plan will continue regularly, so we are likely to recruit again in future.

Additional Information:

  • If successful, we’ll request a basic criminal record check for you. We’ll arrange and process this for you and will cover all the costs. Any issues raised in the check will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • To volunteer in this role, you must be aged 18 or over.
  • We are legally required to ensure all volunteers from overseas have the right to volunteer in the UK, so please check your visa before applying. SMG is unable to act as a sponsor organisation if you do not have a visa that allows you to volunteer.
