Horton Housing developed out of the Bradford day shelter which was first established in 1976. We were registered as a Industrial and Provident Society in 1985. We provide services for vulnerable people who experience: homelessness, substance abuse, mental health problems, physical health issues, social isolation, disabilities as well as refugees, ex offenders, older and younger people.

Our Mission 'To promote social justice and equal access through the provision of a range of personalised housing-related support and training services designed to deliver self-esteem, respect and independence to people who are disadvantaged by housing and social circumstances, discrimination, financial exclusion and other forms of social need'
Befrienders are carefully selected volunteers who are trained to provide support and companionship to lonly, or emotionally distressed, people. Befrienders will usually visit for an hour or so per week. This can include walks to the park, trip to the movies or weekly telephone conversations. Peer mentors will provide less of a supportive relationship and have a stronger emphasis on goal setting and time limited support. It's a great role for those with lived experience of the issues faced by the homeless and makes a big difference to our clients knowing that they have someone to turn to who does truly understand what they are going through.

We are looking for:
1) To have a good standard of written and verbal English
2) Excellent communication skills, including an appropriate telephone manner and people skills
3) A friendly, welcoming and flexible approach and be able to relate to others
4) Ability to use own initiative but be able to ask for help when required
5) Some computer skills, including being familiar with Microsoft Office, emails and database
6) Be reliable and non-judgemental
Desirable:
1) You do not have to have any related qualifications for this role but you should be understanding, patient, empathetic and have good listening skills.
2) An understanding of the issues faced by the homeless and those with mental health and addiction issues.
Induction and training:
Minimum commitment level: Once a week
