What will you be focusing on to improve student life at the University?
One of the key areas I aim to tackle is the current library policy. Currently, students are constrained by a £20 printing allowance, and the inability to top up when needed can hinder their access to essential resources. I am committed to ensuring equal opportunities for all students by advocating for a change in this policy. If elected, I will actively work towards removing unnecessary restrictions, allowing students the freedom to print and top up without financial barriers. I strongly believe that students should have the freedom to access necessary resources without limitations.
Furthermore, I aim to bring about positive changes within the student union by fostering improved communication between students and faculty. This involves organising more educational events and workshops that not only enhance academic knowledge but also create a platform for constructive dialogue. Strengthening this connection will contribute to a more collaborative and supportive learning environment.
We all know that the current timetable is not efficient or student-friendly. I would like to address issues such as clashes, gaps, and late notice changes, ensuring that students can plan their schedules effectively. A streamlined timetable contributes to a smoother academic experience, allowing students to focus on their studies without unnecessary disruptions.
Addressing concerns specific to each faculty is crucial for a tailored approach to student welfare and experience. I will actively engage with students to identify and address their unique needs, advocating for additional resources and more interactive teaching methods where necessary. This personalised approach will contribute to a more enriching educational experience for all students. Improving the email communication system is another key aspect of my agenda. Clear and timely communication is essential for keeping students informed about important updates, events, and opportunities. I will work towards enhancing the efficiency of the email system to ensure that information reaches students promptly and effectively.
Lastly, I am dedicated to promoting awareness and education about plagiarism. Collaborating with individual faculties, I will implement effective strategies to prevent and address plagiarism cases and allow students to thrive.
In conclusion, my vision is to create a university environment that prioritises the needs and success of every student. Through these initiatives, I aim to build a stronger, more inclusive community where academic excellence and student well-being go hand in hand.
What experience do you have from volunteering or current/previous work that you believe will be relevant to your nomination?
"As an executive within the Islamic Society (ISOC), I have honed my leadership skills by actively contributing to the planning and execution of events that fostered religious understanding and community engagement. This experience has equipped me with the ability to collaborate effectively and create inclusive environments for diverse groups of individuals. As part of the executive team, I played an active role in organising events but also was the prayer room co-ordinator for the sisters side of the prayer room and would regularly help set up for Jummah prayers.
My role as the Women's Officer, I have led many campaigns for women’s safety and advocacy. I actively worked towards promoting a safer and more inclusive environment for all students, demonstrating my commitment to social justice and equality. Campaigns include:
• Organising a Henna night social to appreciate the beauty of Henna and to teach others about its cultural significance.
• Celebrated international men’s day to show inclusivity around campus.
• Breast cancer awareness campaign in collaboration with the health faculty.
• Organised the Reclaim the Night march to advocate for an empowering and safe environment for students.
• Worked with the west Yorkshire police and CEO of UBU to address safeguarding issues raised by students.
Serving as the Founding Executive and Vice President of the Sri Lankan Society has given me invaluable insights into how to gather a community of people together with a common identity. I successfully contributed to creating a space that celebrated cultural diversity while fostering a sense of belonging among students who were away from home.
My role as a Council Lay Member further strengthened my understanding of governance structures within the Union. I have also supported students with and raised motions myself including the Palestine Motion. This experience has equipped me with the knowledge necessary to navigate institutional frameworks and represent the interests of the student body effectively.
As a Student Ambassador, I've had the incredible opportunity to assist numerous students on campus during open days and experience days. I've been able to share valuable information about our university, showcase the various programs and faculties, and help guide prospective students in making informed decisions about their educational journey. Also visited high schools, and colleges, have done several open days at different schools and colleges, and promoted our university and faculties, courses, and facilities.
Collectively, these experiences have provided me with a well-rounded skill set, including leadership, advocacy, organisational development, governance, and effective communication. If nominated, I am confident that I can use these skills to contribute positively to the university community, ensuring the representation and well-being of all students.
What ideas would you like to implement to improve UBU's student experience?
"To enhance the UBU student experience, I propose implementing a multifaceted approach that focuses on offering academic support services, such as tutoring programs, study groups, and mentorship opportunities, can help students excel in their studies.
Academic Support Services - Offering academic support services is essential for student success. Implementing tutoring programs, study groups, and mentorship opportunities can provide students with the additional assistance needed to excel in their studies. Additionally, clear and accessible guidelines for academic requirements and expectations will help students navigate their educational journey more effectively.
Community Engagement and Collaboration - Fostering collaboration between departments, student societies, and the wider community is crucial. This interconnected approach creates a more supportive learning environment. Organising events that bring together students, student representatives, faculty, and industry professionals will encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, providing students with valuable real-world insights.
Transparent Communication - Ensuring transparent communication between students and academic staff is vital for a cohesive educational experience. Regular forums or town hall meetings should be established to address students' concerns and share updates on changes in curriculum, assessment methods, and other relevant information.
Academic Workshops and Seminars - Organising workshops on study skills, time management, and exam preparation will empower students with essential tools for academic success. Hosting seminars featuring guest speakers, professors, or industry professionals will enrich students' educational experiences by exposing them to diverse perspectives on relevant topics.
Student-Staff Forums - Facilitating regular forums where students can engage with faculty members fosters a constructive dialogue. These forums allow students to discuss concerns, provide feedback, and ask questions, contributing to an improved overall educational experience.
Student-Led Conferences - Encouraging students to organise conferences provides them with a platform to showcase their research and discuss academic topics of interest but also lets them lead and educate staff about campaigns they are passionate about. Providing support for students to attend external conferences broadens their academic perspectives and contributes to their professional development.
Advocacy for Educational Policies - Advocating for student-friendly educational policies, including fair grading practices, flexible course scheduling, and accessible learning materials, is crucial. Collaborating with university administration to address issues surrounding these areas will greatly benefit the student experience.
By implementing these ideas, we can create a more enriching and supportive educational experience for UBU students, fostering academic success and personal growth.
