Your Guide to What's Happening at UBU This Week!

Monday 6th October 2025

After a bit of a holiday, the UBU Weekly is back!

We have recently moved to a new website and it's taken us a while to figure out how it all works, but we're now up to speed. This is the first of many weekly emails keeping you informed about the various events, activities, and opportunities available on campus and around Bradford. It's your one-stop shop for all things UBU, and this email is a whopper, so keep reading and find out about student offers, events, trips, volunteering opportunities, and much more.

Student life is full of wonder, and so are the skies, with the Harvest Supermoon smiling on us today and tomorrow, with the Draconid Meteor Shower being active on Wednesday night too. So take a break from the midnight books and look up to the sky.

Closer to home, there is also plenty to see and do, with the prestigious Turner Prize exhibition open at Cartwright Hall in Lister Park, where you can go and see the most prestigious new developments in contemporary arts and you can get your free ticket HERE!

If you like sports, Bradford City are flying high and are serious challengers for promotion to the Championship; you can find out how to get discounted tickets in next weeks UBU Weekly.

On campus, Black History Month is under way, and there are plenty of sports and societies that are up and running for you to join and get involved with; more on this in the email.

Anyway, enough waffle, read on and get involved.

Follow our Socials

The best way to get involved with UBU is to follow our socials; all of these can be accessed via our Link Tree - Click HERE! to find out more.

Join a Sport or Society

UBU has 25 student-led sports teams and 55 societies (with plenty more in the process of being created) that you can get involved with while studying at Bradford.

Joining a student group is one of the best ways to make the most out of your student life, as you will make friends, can learn new skills, see the country, and be part of something amazing.

There is definitely something for everyone, with a wide range of sports and various categories for societies including dance, crafts, religion, academic, international, and more.

So whether you fancy trying football, ice skating, crochet, coding, video games, or meditation, there is something for everyone.

You can find out more about our sports and societies, and find links to socials by clicking HERE!

All of our student groups have a small joining fee for the year, but you're always welcome to go along and try out a session for free first to see if you like it.

If you'd like to take part in a sport, you can check out the timetable below and go along to a training session for free this week.

Take a Hike - Support Disabled Young People on a Walk at Brimham Rocks - October 12

If you're looking to get into the countryside, meet new people, and do something worthwhile, then join the Take a Hike Brimham Rocks Walk in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales this Sunday.

Take a Hike is a hiking group for students and young adults with and without disabilities. There will be a few walks throughout the year, with a summer trip to the Isle of Man (funding permitting), but if you want to come on the trip, you have to come on the training hikes and get to know the team.

Our first hike is to Brimham Rocks, a natural rock formation phenomenon in the Yorkshire Dales on Sunday 12th October. We're taking a bus as it's the first trip; there's no cost.

See how beautiful Brimham Rocks are by watching the video HERE!

This isn't just a walk; it's an experience, and over the years some amazing friendships and moments have been shared, and you can be part of the Take a Hike family.

To get an idea of the hikes, please see our YouTube Playlist HERE!

Tickets are only £3, and we're taking a bus there and back direct from the University, so grab your ticket now by clicking HERE!

Your Starter for 10 - Join the Bradford University Challenge Team

In 1979 Bradford University won University Challenge, the hardest quiz on television, and it's time we got back on the show and to bring that trophy back to its rightful home.

This quiz goes out on BBC2 and has been running since 1962 and is well regarded as the most difficult quiz on television.

If you'd like to apply to be on the team, email ubu@bradford.ac.uk and we'll be in touch, and hopefully this year, we can make it past the auditions in Manchester.

Poetry Workshop - Wednesday 8 October - 1pm

Join us on Wednesday for a poetry workshop delivered by Samar Shahdad, an exiled Iranian poet.

Samar's work, which she has described as being influenced by her studies in Peace Studies and her personal experiences,

explores themes of exile, identity, belonging, and language.

She often uses her poetry to address social issues, including the experience of women in Iran.

Having grown up in Shiraz, Iran, she moved to the UK at the age of 24.

A key theme in her writing is the idea of "home" and the process of finding one's place after leaving one's country of origin.

She has also expressed a passion for translation, viewing it as an act of love for humanity.

So, bring a pen and some paper and let inspiration strike.

October is 'Cyber Security Awareness Month' ... and it's all about keeping you and our University safe online.

Cyber attackers don’t just go after banks or businesses. Students, and universities in general, are big targets too. From fake 'IT support' emails, to hacked social media accounts - a single click can cause big problems.

That's why, during October, we’ll be sharing quick tips each week for how to:

  • Create strong passwords and use two-step (multi-factor) verification
  • Spot phishing emails before you click
  • Keep your devices and data safe
  • Use AI tools and cloud apps responsibly

These aren’t just 'IT rules'; they are life skills you'll use long after university.

So, please look out for the weekly tips on the University Portal and IT Services intranet site - together we can make campus a safer space, online and offline.
