More in depth announcement for UBU Website concerning elections
Following last week’s decision to suspend elections and open an investigation into the incident that occurred on Wednesday 7th March 2018, after hustings; an investigating committee was held on Monday 12th March 2018 and recommendations were made to the elections committee.
The investigating committee viewed the hustings for BME Officer and Sports and Wellbeing Officer which took place on Wednesday 7th March 2018, Student Central, University of Bradford. They viewed CCTV coverage in the Student Central entrance, supplied by University Security. The footage showed that there was a physical altercation between a number of individuals but that it was impossible to positively identify any particular individuals as being responsible for physical assaults. It was shown that the melee quickly dispersed thanks to the swift response of staff, candidates and sabbatical officers.
Whilst watching the hustings the committee noted that it was obvious that the situation was tense and there was a potential for trouble. They believe that hustings could have been better organised which would have diffused the situation.
Based on feedback from the investigating committee and upon reflection after last week’s hustings, the Union would like to acknowledge that there is much room for improvement for future hustings. We would like to apologise for the way they were handled and specifically for any animosity that may have arisen as a result.
However, we also recognise that aside from hustings, the behaviour of some of the candidates was unacceptable and therefore they will be required to publically apologise to the student body.
We would like to remind all students (including candidates) that the UBU regards respect, equality and dignity very highly and though further disciplinary action cannot be taken, due to the footage not explicitly identifying those who caused harm last Wednesday, in no way do we condone such behaviour.
All candidates are now required to reflect on their own behaviour and that of their supporters (who also act on their behalf). Additionally, all candidates involved in the specific incident aforementioned, will be issued a final warning, meaning that any further infringement will result in immediate expulsion from the UBU Elections.
On a more positive note, as mentioned last week, the two parties involved in the incident met on Friday 9thMarch 2018 for a reconciliation which involved positive, open and honest discussion. We hope that this mature and constructive behaviour continues and that all students once again are able to feel part of the united and single community that is Team Bradford.
Finally, as the investigation has now concluded, the elections period will recommence (for one day only) on Thursday 15th March 2018, 9am-5pm. Results will be announced on Friday 16th March 2018 at 3pm in the Union Mall, Student Central.
We wish all candidates the very best and look forward to a fair and respectable election.
